A long, long time ago....we went to Busch Gardens...and, we took pictures, so I could share them...so, here! I am sharing!

This was a classic! I asked if I could buy this sign! I want it too live permanently on my front porch-a permanent excuse!

And look what was RIGHT THERE

Do you really need to ask why? It is called SHEIKRA and it pauses for 30 seconds at the top of this hill before you plummet to the ground...

I thought this was great fun...we don't get a lot of kangaroos home in Cincinnati!

The humidity is waning, the leaves are drying, the air has that certain scent to it. Oh, it'll be awhile, but it's a comin'...and the folklets here declared it was time for school! Really?

I guess I should start by admitting that after some soul searching, I have decided to change things up a bit...I am actually planning activities and organizing them this year. Following their leads of course, but not leaving them entirely on their own...I don't know where that fits in the realm of "unschooling", but it doesn't really matter to me this year. I love having my kids here, I love teaching and guiding them, so, what does it matter what we do or how we do it! There is such peace that comes to you when you have explored, obsessed, and worried over this for SO long, to finally realize what works for you-Relief! Happiness! Joy!

We started at morning nap time, after cleaning and tidying a bit (yes, I came to the realization that I cannot and should not have to do it alone...with 8 others in the house-relief!). We sat at the table and began animal research projects. Haven chose the Commerson's dolphin, Dominic the walrus, and Gretchen the clownfish. We even got Bean in on the action as she colored a sheet about the letter A and then tried to do a craft that really morphed into fingerpainting with glue! Then she and I went out for water play while every one else finished their projects.

There was scrabble, and legos, and reading...Magic Tree House #16 and Thirteen plus one. Now they are wrapping up with playmobil and we are eagerly awaiting Dad's arrival to give our animal presentations to him.

Good enough for today, pizza and salad for dinner...We'll see about tomorrow!

I'm sure it has a very fancy name, but I'm not sure what that is. What I do know is that it is your sort of "primitive" brain that holds your "fight" or "flight" instinct. When things get crazy, or desperate, you just automatically "go there", to that place, to that part of your brain, and you either stay and fight, or you run away. You essentially go primitive to survive. It is shown that a lot of behaviorally challenged children go quickly to this part of the brain when they feel they are in danger, or about to lose control. You really can't reason with someone when they go primitive, because they are just in a survival mode. The other thing is, it's not real good to stay in that "primitive" state for to long....

How do I know these things? Because I "go" there quickly, in fact, it's where I have lived for the past few months.....

On the flip side of the primitive brain, you also have a highly developed pre-frontal cortex that helps with reasoning, understanding, explaining...NOT primitive, NOT where I have been AT ALL!!!

It is taking quite a toll on me to be in this "survival"mode ALL THE TIME-I think it was easy for me to "go there", because I spent a great deal of my childhood there, so I think once I felt the need to go back there, it was, well, quite natural..

I am exhausted. Please understand me, not like ,"oh my, I am so tired" Or, "man, I ran 10 miles today." tired...but exhausted. I feel as if I am swimming upstream with no hopes of spawning my eggs...just swimming upstream with no great event, only the ultimate event, ultimate death. Swimming, swimming, swimming and thats it! I have come to the conclusion, that there is no winner in this foster care system...NOT the children, NOT the foster parents, NOT even the parents if they get their children back (why do you think so many children go into care again?) NO ONE WINS...I am fighting and fighting for NO ONE TO WIN...I am swimming upstream without spawning...

But you know what? I will keep swimming, keep fighting, because there are very important little people in my house that need me to keep swimming, even if I lose, even if they lose, because in the end, what I think matters, is that someone DID swim for you, that someone thought you were IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO SWIM FOR...

So, in my hypothalamus (? correct term?) of fight or flight, which is fight fight fight right now, I will keep "swimming" and not turn and "swim" away. There will be no "flight".

TWO times around the sun, and what a journey it has been....

Two years ago, a very tiny, and very premature baby arrived 14 weeks early...weighing just under a pound. Intubated, and cared for by what I personally declare the most fabulous neonatology team in the country, Cincinnati Childrens Hospital-you made it! You fought, and fought...so very true to your character!

The rest of the story is yours to share, someday, when you are ready...but for now I revel in the very Grace of God that brought you here to my home, to my life. You are loved and adored my very , very precious Bean, and no matter what happens, ever, you will always be my precious baby girl...Happy, happy birthday Bean...what an honor to be part of your life.
Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10466534116251417415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5721805536443121985.post-9584568330465819552011-08-12T16:43:00.000-07:002011-08-12T17:02:14.641-07:00Friday August 11th, 2011 crazy!Crazy...that is how I feel. I have been caught up in a crazy emotional up and down week-thankfully I had a good friend to join me there! We spent a lot of time texting and on the phone commiserating about the foster care system..we are both going through a lot of crazy up and downs with our fosters, and it is really tearing us apart-I think we both desire some normalcy, or rather, some permancy, of some sort. I really didn't mean to blog about foster care tonight, but apparently, I am. One of the hardest, I think, parts about foster care is the inability to make "plans" long term. Because I am OCD, natch, I am starting to think about the holidays...and it's hard to make these plans including the foster children. My friend and I were also longing for the days when we could actually go out and do things, like the zoo, or Kings Island, or the pool. I think we realize the toll this calling takes on our children! Sometimes, no matter how much you love your fosters, you just want to be your nuclear family for awhile.
Well, due to all these crazy feelings, I decided to turn the house upside down. Anyone who knows me knows that I am notorious for moving furniture and switching rooms around at whim. When my world is out of control, this truly helps me feel "in control" at home. So, today, like a mad woman, I switched around rooms. I guess it would help if I posted pictures, but it is too late for "before" pictures now!!!
I feel a little better now, still a lot of cleaning to do, but got some rearranging done. Home school starts soon, not sure when, but think we need to give it an official start here soon-kind of goes with the rhythym, the rhythym that we all crave...
As always, keep praying. Life is crazy now, babies are in limbo, emotions are running high, people are passionate about advocating for the little ones in their lives...there is only so much furniture that can be rearranged!

It was reported that 41, 500 people were there! (and I was one of them!) Opening at 8:20pm with "Hello Goodbye" and closing three hours, and two encores later, with "Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight, The End"...oh, my...
It was legendary...
Thank you, Sir PaulSarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10466534116251417415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5721805536443121985.post-86944802992235188742011-08-04T12:33:00.000-07:002011-08-04T13:03:14.105-07:00Thursday August 4th, 2011 listsI went to Target last night with my six youngest...11, 9, 7, 1, 1, and 1-why you ask? Why on God's green earth would I do that? Wat was I thinking? I was not thinking, I was desperate to get out of the house. Unlike other families that have been able to go places, and be at the pool te past few weeks, we have not...because Mr. Salmonella had come to stay! But, alas, like all things good and bad, it has passed-hooray!!! So, off to Target. Upon arriving at the store I saw the signs everywhere-Back to School! -Stock up on supplies for school!-Check off your list here!, and so on. We laughed and joked about how we do not have to do that!!! Praise God!!!

But, we do need to make our lists...

I had not previously made these lists, but seen a lot of unschoolers and homeschoolers making them...

The lists of what we want to learn this year!!! Now I must admit, not the quantity of a week ago, but, it is still here-our very bad friend...Mr. Salmonella. Oh, how I wish he would just go away...
Please note that I have given him the male gender, a female would never cause this much trauma to another female...
The diarrhea started July 17th, and here we are, July 31st...still having diarrhea
seriously (I wanted to put a question mark after seriously, but Bean has pulled off the question mark key, and Lord knows where it is...)
Tomorrow is Rabbit, Rabbit day
You will have a good month if you say "Rabbit, rabbit" BEFORE your feet touch the ground in the morning...
no matter where you are, you will hear me...
I will be screaming it at the top of my lungs...Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10466534116251417415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5721805536443121985.post-37388254038333247862011-07-26T05:02:00.000-07:002011-07-26T05:14:31.762-07:00Tuesday July 26th, 2011 EmbattledSunday night, Haven has blood in diarrhea...call doc, of course we have to go back to hospital...I text my pastor, he texts back "feeling embattled?"

embattled:the feeling of being constantly at war

YES!!! Yes and yes...

I pulled in the driveway yesterday after running to walmart for supplies: very unhelathy for us and te environment toxic cleaning materials that I can't even believe that I purchased...out of fear, that if I did not kill and disinfect this grossness it would take over even more of the house! I still cannot believe I bought some of the stuff I did! Anyway, I was met by a tearful Dominic telling me, that he too had bloody diarrhea...

sigh...

lice was bad...

ringworm was an inconvenience...

Salmonella is a nightmare...this is consuming the house. We can't do anything, we can't go anywhere...

We did set up our own "Salmonella Waterpark" in the fron yard last night. With a separate "salmonella pool" for the twins....I know the neighbors think we are crazy. I was going to put up a sign, but I didn't

Dominic did open up the Salmonella cafe, and we pretend dined on salmonella cereal, salmonella soup and salmonella stew...

At least we are keeping our sense of humorSarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10466534116251417415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5721805536443121985.post-83108498926816238012011-07-23T14:37:00.000-07:002011-07-23T14:49:42.814-07:00saturday july 23rd, 2011 another hospital trip...we have been to the doctor, which is at the hospital, 3 times this week...once on monday for thing one, once on thursday for thing one, thing two and bean, and today, for my oldest daughter, Haven...

It all started when I was in the kitchen prepping dinner for the crock pot, I was on the phone with childrens hospital regarding thing one and thing two, when Haven walked in and said she didn't feel well...I joked with the nurse and said "oh no, another one bites the dust!" she laughed and we hung up. Haven walked over to the sink like she was going to get sick, swayed, looked blank and then toppled over! I caught her and gently eased us both down to the floor. I quickly called my neighbor for help as there were littles all over the place, and Randy was about an hour away for a football tournament, I then called 911, and then texted randy:emergency, call home now!

God love the neighbor! His wife was out but he rushed over and pitched right in-he got the squad in the house and held babies while I stayed with Haven...low blood pressure, high pulse, clammy...they werent sure if it was the evil salmonella so when randy got home they went straight to childrens hospital...again...they are going to know me by name soon.

4 hours and lots of tests later it was concluded that whe was dehydrated and low on sodium. I suppose that might happen when you had a three hour gymnastics practice in an un airconditioned gym when there was a heat index of 115 degrees...

By the way, we have another appointment at the hospital for thing one and thing two tomorrow am, at 915am, four times this week that will make...unless Sunday counts as a new week?Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10466534116251417415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5721805536443121985.post-24902181686943536482011-07-22T06:19:00.000-07:002011-07-22T06:36:19.990-07:00Friday July 22nd, 2011 And so it goes...Well, we have been back for a while...the beast pulled in the driveway late saturday night...home to a clean house (very rare, but i scrubbed and cleaned BEFORE we left) our own beds, and our very happy pets. When I get it together I will post some vacation pictures, because, we had a really good time...extrememly good time...
After church on sunday and great happiness of returning to THAT community of our belovedes in our church family, we came home to await the return of thing one and thing two (who stayed with another foster family while we were on vacation) They came home, not feeling well, but that's okay, we were glad to be back to our pod of nine! We snuggled and kissed, and napped, and they napped, and they had diarrhea, and they napped, and they had more diarrhea, and they had fevers, and they were cranky...hmm...so one of my least favorite activities on Monday morning-THE DOCTOR!!!
I triaged them and only took one, thing one, as he is the "oldest" (by like, five minutes) it was actually kind of nice taking him by myself as he was not feeling well, and snuggly! So an hour later we leave with a diagnosis of ringworm, contact dermatitis, and a viral infection. They did take a stool sample to check for Shigella, just in case. So back home...to more snuggles, fever, and diarrhea, lots of diarrhea. I chalk up thing two's condition to the same viral infection and keep changing diapers...
Then yesterday morning the phone rings, the test results for Thing ones stool came back, and...SALMONELLA! Salmonella? I thought you got that from eating like, raw chicken? Well, it was a big deal, the lady from the health department called, and we had to find the source of this-for once in my life, it was not me...now I say this because for all of my life, it is and has been, always me...but i got a break this time. We had to go through dates, and times, and places, etc...I think they found the infection spot, but not sure.
Essentially, we are under quarrantine, till this all settles-apparently the poop is like some andromeda stain toxic substance, material and we cannot let it leak, and have to wear gloves, and bleach the house with a 9:1 bleach water mixture...so, i'll let you know how it all turns out...Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10466534116251417415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5721805536443121985.post-37361667805502719492011-07-08T16:54:00.001-07:002011-07-08T16:58:15.057-07:00Friday July 8th, 2011 I forgot about the flamingo...
Oh yeah, I totally forgot to tell you about the flamingo....

Today, at Busch Gardens, I was feeding the flamingos, in a really cool exhibit, and...

ONE BIT ME! The beach we are staying at is Indian Rocks Beach on the Gulf Coast of Florida (do not call it the ocean-it is the gulf!-big diff down here!)

Soft sand. Small waves. Bathwater warm...mmmm. Open the porch door and smell it? Mmmm...sunsets and lacrosse on the beach. Sandcastles and half naked babies romping in the surf. Fishing and collecting sand crabs. Laughing with new friends, holding hands with old, beloved ones...soulmates.

Even when it rains, it's magical at the beach. The rain makes soft litle indentations in the sand...plop, plop, plop. Running in the rain, mouths open for rain drops, and small beautiful souls open for the world. Open for love, open for the beach.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10466534116251417415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5721805536443121985.post-9005422510616894332011-07-04T15:25:00.000-07:002011-07-04T15:42:30.619-07:00Monday July 4th, 2011 The Zoo!HAPPY 4th OF JULY!!!!

Today we went to the zoo...I forgot my camera (of course) It was an odd trip, as we took Bean, and her birth mother. It's what we always say on the first of every month. Why? Because I did it growing up. Why? Because my mom did it growing up. Why? Because her family did it growing up...you get my point.

You have to say it BEFORE your feet touch the floor after midnight- if you get up to go to the bathroom at 1:00 and don't say it, it really doesn't count if you try to say it when you get up at 6:00, or 7:00...

I guess all our families have these quirky little sayings they say, that stick around. If we have to get up early, like everyday thank to the twins, we always say, "time to make the doughnuts" Now we have said this for a very long time, not just since the twins, and it was particularly entertaining when Randy worked at a bakery in the wee hours one year when money was particularly tight. As my loyal, devoted husband would roll out of bed at 3:45 am to get to his extra job, he would say, "time to make the doughnuts" groggily...and we would chuckle.

There is also a rally cool line in Lord of the Rings when Gandalf is on the bridge holding back the Balrog (sp?) this really wicked looking demon thingy...and Gandalf slams his staff down and says in a loud booming voice "you shall not pass!" Well, everytime one of our older kids tries to open the rear door and get in the car, we always say, "You shall not pass!" in a Gandalf type voice due to the fact that there are three toddler car seats in the way. (How do they get in to the third seat you ask? Through the hatch...of course!)

When I was young, well actually until high school, which was young...my mom would see me off everyday by saying, "don't take any wooden nickles." really have no idea about that one, but guess what, I say it to my kids too, and they look at me with that same perplexed look that I bestowed upon my mother.

Occassionally, my kids come up with their own, we call this "Millerese" because I do think at times, we, and they, speak their own language-others watch in amazement as we converse about simple things...they love to say, "That's not-a nice" when someone does or says something mean, this is particularly good for breaking the tension, as we all have to giggle. This comes from a Your Baby can Read commercial when a little girl is reading from Charlottes Web about her father getting an axe and she looks at the camera and says, "That's not-a nice" My children find this hilarious, so it has made it into our reprotroire(know I spelled THAT wrong!

Sayings like this are just fun, and cute, and memorable...one of my absolute favorites was when Sebastian, now 14, was about 2, I was preparing an artichoke at my mom's for dinner. He looked at it and exclaimed, "Woah! Dat's a beeg brocci" (translation: woah, that's a big broccoli) It still makes me laugh out loud! So, you can imagine, if we are out and about, and see something really big, that you would hear us all say, "Woah! Dat's a beeg brocci!" Laughing at ourselves!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10466534116251417415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5721805536443121985.post-73828097167645130162011-06-25T16:45:00.000-07:002011-06-25T17:09:55.126-07:00
YMCA Gymnastics Nationals Toledo Ohio

June 22nd-June 24th 2011

Haven was a little nervous on the car trip there...

But we had best friends and little sisters there for support!
The Seagate Center in Toledo

The competition gym.
