Tuesday March 16th

Last night I wrote a really long post before I went to bed but for some bizarre reason it didnt post. What I was posting about was the fact that I had concentrated on the craziness and lack of much of anything around here yesterday, but upon reflection, was excited to realize what we really did accomplish!
The number on rule is that living is learning. The beautiful thing about learning is that we are always learning. I did the majority of my learning after all my schooling because then I was finished with my formal schooling experience. I am not going to be one of those that says everything I learned at school was useless, but I have yet to this day needed to use any trigonometry in my practical life. Now, some of my schoolmates that went on to become engineers may differ with me, but I think that just proves my husand and mines theory on education-it is not a one size fits all thing.
What I wanted to say last night-as well as apologizing if I offended anyone with the baby back ribs thing- was that we did learn a lot yesterday. We have been following the situation in Japan very, very closely. From this stems discussions on islands, economy, tsunamis, plate tectonics, earthquakes, nuclear fuel, alternate fuel sources, and unfortunately, what exactly a meltdown is. We finished our clay bowls, played creatively with our playmobil and learned how to cooperate and share our ideas in a group. There was world map study with Carmen SanDiego and reading aloud from chapter books. We used a cookbook to make "movie floor snack mix" (which is much better than it sounds) and used our multiplication and division skills to concoct this aptly named dish. Lastly, I watched in amazement as my oldest daughter put together a power point/slide show on a fashion show of our toddler bean. Unschooling at its very best folks-unbidden by me, totally self directed by her, and something of great interest to her. I wish I could post it but cannot due to foster children confidentiality. It was complete with dialogue and music! I guess my point is that among the thorns, there are many roses, many, many roses. We are doing it folks-we are learning!
